A Place of Learning
ATCO Gas School Program

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is very happy to be a part of our youth education system.  Touring the museum could be one of the greatest hands on learning opportunities that you and your students can experience.  Sport heroes, legends, community builders, amazing athletes and people who have left an impact on sport and our province are all under one roof, right here in your own backyard.

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum would like to collaborate with teachers to provide resources and professional support to assist in the education of our youth.  The program and tours that we have created meet many of the school curriculum criteria and meet many of the educational goals.  Our program enhances creativity, critical thinking and community involvement.  Added to all the learning opportunities will be the fun and challenges of the many interactive games throughout the museum.

The school programs “The Lasting Traditionsand “Times Gone By” are both designed to meet a large range of learning outcomes for different grades.

Grade 3: the social studies students can examine how they belong and are connected to their community by exploring the customs, celebrations, stories and practices from displays that portray Alberta history. Students will develop skills of historical thinking, by applying terms related to time, including past, present and future from either program.

Grade 4: students can focus on Alberta history, as they reflect upon the people, places and stories of Alberta. They will examine how major events and people shaped the evolution of Alberta; example the first Calgary Stampede. Grade 4 students visiting the ASHFM can study recreation and tourism in Alberta by visiting our winter room and Tourism Red Deer located in the same building.

Grade 5: classrooms will experience Aboriginal traditional games and learn to understand more about the way of life of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit people. They will learn to appreciate the diversity of Canada’s heritage as it will be supported with pictures, stories and archives showcased in the museum. In the program they will learn to express personal experiences and ideas of the past and present.

Grade 6: students will learn to understand the diversity of the Aboriginal traditions, values and attitudes. Students can put their English and Language skills to test by reading and studying all about the men and women who have dedicated their lives to sport and sport development in our province. They can use their research skills on the web to find more about the role these people still play in sport today.

Grade 7: students will develop skills of historical thinking; analyze historical issues to form or support an opinion. History research projects can help learn to draw conclusions based upon research and evidence.

Grade 9: classroom projects could be to work as groups and analyze how the museum, web, media reflect the traditions, beliefs and technologies of different cultures, communities and people of our province.

All students that participate in the Beyond the Classroom program will receive a working journal to draw, answer questions and journal their experience at the museum. Students will also have time to intermingle in the museum, to read about the success of athletes and appreciate the health benefits of an active way of life. They will also learn how leadership, teamwork, goal setting and personal challenge can lead to successful accomplishments and honour.
